Technical tour

On the final day of the conference, on June 17, participants will have the opportunity to join one of four technical visits.
Please note that the programs below are currently being finalized and may be subject to changes; attendees will be asked to select their preferred visit at the time of registration.

1. Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission – Ispra

Starting around 7:00 | ~10 hours 

Full-day visit with an organised bus departure from Milano Centrale between 7:00 and 7:30. The programme includes a tour of the Europa Science Experience, presentations on the Water and Ocean Unit, networking with JRC scientists, visits to specialised laboratories (water, environmental biotech, marine optics, microplastics), and an afternoon serious game on water reuse. An organised bus transfer back to Milano Centrale is provided, with arrival at approximately 18:30.

2. ALFA – Wastewater Treatment & Panperduto Dam

Starting at 8:45 | ~6 hours 

Participants will be transferred by organised bus to the Sant’Antonino Ticino Wastewater Treatment Plant. The guided tour focuses on large-scale wastewater treatment, covering a 400,000 PE facility authorised for wastewater reuse and compliant with the new Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. The programme highlights circular economy approaches through a fish-farming project for river restocking, and nature-based solutions including constructed wetlands supporting the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus).

Following lunch at the Panperduto Dam, the afternoon session features a guided visit to the dam, offering a broader perspective on water resource management and biodiversity conservation. The visit concludes at 14:30.

3. CAP ZeroC BioPiattaforma – Sesto San Giovanni, Milan

Starting at 9:30 | ~4 hours 

The visit starts at 9:30 with a presentation at Politecnico di Milano, followed by an organised bus transfer to the BioPlatform facility in Sesto San Giovanni. The programme includes a guided tour and a Q&A session, with return to Politecnico by 14:00.

4. MM Milano – Navigli & Water Heritage


Starting at 9:30 | ~5.5 hours The visit starts at 9:30 with a guided urban walk along Milan’s historic canals (Navigli), followed by a lunch break and an afternoon visit to the Centrale dell’Acqua Museum. Autonomous travel to the meeting point. Approximate end of the visit at 15:00.


This technical tour combines a visit to the Centrale dell’Acqua Museum with a short walking tour to explore the historical and cultural relationship between Milan and its water. Participants will visit the historic pumping station and multimedia exhibits, followed by an urban walk highlighting how water infrastructure, canals, and engineering solutions have shaped the city and continue to support Milan’s drinking water system.
